The French Immersion pathway — and the one detail that catches families out

Port Coquitlam hosts more French Immersion entry points than any other Tri-Cities city, which is a genuine advantage if you want your child in the program. Early French Immersion begins at four dual-track elementaries: École Coquitlam River (the K–3 host), École Kilmer (central Port Coquitlam), École Mary Hill (Mary Hill neighbourhood), and École Irvine in the northeast. École Westwood operates as a Kindergarten-only French Immersion entry point.

At the secondary level, École Riverside Secondary carries both a French Immersion option and Advanced Placement, making it the natural continuation for families who started Early FI and want academic breadth alongside it.

Terry Fox Secondary — the athletics and academy draw

Terry Fox is the school families most often move for, and the reason is programming rather than proximity. Alongside Advanced Placement and Mandarin, it runs the Pacific Rim Hockey Academy, and the Ravens field provincially competitive football, basketball, lacrosse and soccer programs. For a family with a committed athlete, that combination is difficult to replicate elsewhere in the Tri-Cities. For a family without one, it should not by itself drive a purchase decision — the academic offering at Riverside is strong, and the commute and price differences between the two catchments are often material.

Hazel Trembath — where the rebuild actually stands

Hazel Trembath Elementary was destroyed by fire and its students have been operating from a temporary location. In November 2025 the Province approved the rebuild: a 240-seat school with two Kindergarten classrooms and eight elementary classrooms, at a cost of nearly $39 million, using a fast-track construction approach. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2026, with occupancy targeted for December 2027.

If you are buying in the Hazel Trembath catchment, plan around the temporary arrangement continuing through to that 2027 occupancy date, and verify the current catchment assignment with SD43 — displaced-school arrangements are exactly the situation where published catchment maps and day-to-day reality diverge.

What this means when you’re buying in Port Coquitlam

Port Coquitlam generally buys you more house per dollar than Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain or Westwood Plateau, and the school network is a genuine strength rather than a compromise. The practical sequence is to decide the programming question first — French Immersion or English, and if French Immersion, Early or Late — because that narrows the catchments before you start looking at houses. Doing it the other way around is how families end up on a waitlist for a program their address does not feed.

Private and independent options in Port Coquitlam

Three independent schools operate within Port Coquitlam itself. Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary (1335 Dominion Avenue) is the CISVA Catholic regional secondary serving Tri-Cities and Maple Ridge parishes, Grades 8–12. Our Lady of Fatima Bilingual School (315 Walker Street) is a K–7 CISVA school and the only Catholic French-bilingual elementary in the Tri-Cities, running a full dual-stream programme — a genuinely distinctive option if you want both a faith-based education and French. BC Christian Academy (1019 Fernwood Avenue) is an interdenominational Pre-K–12 school.

Independent schools admit by application rather than catchment, so they do not tie you to a specific address the way a public catchment does. If an independent school is your first choice, that widens your housing search considerably rather than narrowing it — a point worth weighing before you pay a premium for a public catchment you may not use.
